If Splendour 2017 was all about the surprise collaborations, then Splendour 2018 was all about the cover songs.

The trend appeared to start, as all good trends do, with The Wiggles. During DZ Deathrays’ sunset set at the Amphitheatre on Friday, Murray The Red Wiggle joined the band on stage for a furious rendition of AC/DC’s ‘Highway To Hell’.

They were followed by festival favourites Dune Rats, who brought out basically every guest they could find in the backstage area for their set — including A.B. Original, Alex Lahey, Drapht, Mallrat, Tkay Maidza, WAAX, Hockey Dad, DZ Deathrays, Gooch Palms. Their covers were just as big: Basement Jaxx’s ‘Where’s Your Head At’, and Black Eyed Peas’ ‘Pump It’.

Lorde got in on the action for her headlining set later in the night, pulling out a surprise version of Powderfinger’s ‘My Happiness’, which she blended into her single ‘Perfect Places’. Don’t expect it to happen again though, as she warned the crowd the cover was a one off: “This is a one night special,” she said. “We will never do it again.”

Speaking of Powderfinger, frontman Bernard Fanning turned up at Splendour the following day to play through ‘Don’t Wanna Be Left Out’ with fellow Brisbanites WAAX. Around that time, Amy Shark decided to bust out a version of Wheatus’ classic ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ to a packed Amphitheatre.

Alex Lahey and Jack River also chose a couple of golden oldies, respectively throwing in Avril Lavigne’s ‘Complicated’ and Tal Bachman’s ‘She’s So High’ into their sets.

A few classic Like A Versions were thrown into the mix as well: DMA’s reprised their goosebump-inducing cover of Cher’s ‘Believe’, and Cub Sport went back to 2016 with Kanye West’s ‘Ultralight Beam’.

Canberra crew SAFIA tore through Gorillaz’s ‘Feel Good Inc.’, and teased a little bit of Britney Spears’ ‘Oops…I Did It Again’. But perhaps the biggest curveball cover of all came in No Mono’s Saturday set at the Amphitheatre, when the duo slid through a version of ‘Unchained Melody’.

So yeah, there were a lot of covers. We’ve scoured the internet to find footage of the best ones, check some of them out below.
