The television industry has been going through an incredibly tumultuous time in this past year. Some of our best shows are now made by online streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Instant Video, and the more traditional cable networks are offering a huge array of content that increasingly blurs the lines between TV and film. It’s an exciting time for the industry.

Or so I thought.

Like the clumsy younger sibling who desperately wants to play ball with the big kids and ends up face-planting and ruining it for everyone, Snapchat have this weekend released their very first original web series. Each episode is only a couple of minutes long, it’s only available via the app for a 24-hour period, it’s called Literally Can’t Even and, apparently, it is literally the worst.

Written by and starring Sasha Spielberg and Emily Goldwyn — the daughters of Steven Spielberg and John Goldwyn — the series follows the ever-enthralling LA adventures of the writers as they play comedic versions of themselves. Like a regurgitated mash-up of Girls, Broad City and your little sister’s Instagram vlog, the content of the show revolves stagnantly around breakups, booze and juice cleanses.

Accordingly, the first episode was called ‘Sip and Surf Pool Party XXX’.

This is actually all part of a larger strategy Snapchat launched last week called Discover. Now broadening their scope from surprise pictures of people’s junk to other things that are happening in the world, the dudebro messaging platform of choice now publishes official content from outlets like CNN, MTV, Cosmo and VICE.

It’s a smart move. The app now has around 200 million active users per month and it was only a matter of time until they explored their options as a full-blown publishing platform, with all the new ad space that tend to go hand-in-hand with that kind of thing. But it also has grave implications for my self-esteem.

I thought I was down with the #youth. I came around to Taylor Swift. I occasionally drink vodka Red Bull. Sometimes I say ‘lol’ IRL. I know what IRL means. But now, a couple of weeks shy of 24, I’ve finally transformed into this.

You can watch the next episode of Literally Can’t Even this Saturday, February 7 via Snapchat Discover. Alternatively, you can just make yourself a nice warm glass of milk and call it a day.
