Thousands Of People Are Calling This Phone Line That Does Nothing But Play ‘All Star’

That's the way I like it and I never get bored.

If nobody’s ever told you the world is gonna roll you, there’s now a phone line that can help.

Some legend has set up a phone number that does literally nothing except play Smash Mouth’s classic hit ‘All Star’ when you call it, and people are flocking to it in the literal thousands.

I stumbled across said phone line this morning while perusing Smash Mouth’s Twitter (don’t ask), and I said yep, what a concept, and immediately dialled the number. I shudder to think how much the international call cost me, but friends, it was worth it — blaring down the line, a little grainy but true, was the greatest song of all time. Or at least a very good one. Let’s not get caught up on this point.

Some of you sharper tools in the shed might now be wondering how 2017’s best hotline came to be. It turns out it was created by Kyle Kelly-Yahner, a drummer and writer, who was inspired by another guy called Dean Sheather who pioneered the concept back in June. It was made using a service called Twilio that lets you write programs than can respond to calls and texts; Kelly-Yahner has even written a blog post on how to do it yourself, if you feel so inclined.

Anyway, Kelly-Yahner tweeted two days ago to report that the phone line had logged 1,200+ calls. Just yesterday, the line was apparently called over 1,000 times. Even Smash Mouth knows about it now, after this endearing tweet exchange:

The years start coming and they don’t stop coming, but nearly two decades after its release, ‘All Star’ is still going strong. If you’d like to call the ‘All Star’ hotline for yourself, the international number (which you’ll need to call from Australia) is +44 1925320399.

Fair warning — check your phone plan to see how much an international call’s going to cost you. But if you can afford it, I highly recommend giving it a ring. You’ll never know if you don’t go. You’ll never shine if you don’t glow.
