If Alex Lahey could have picked any international celebrity to give her a shout-out on Twitter, Smash Mouth might not have been it.

But shit happens and sometimes an ageing rock band whose one big hit soundtracked the Shrek soundtrack in 2001 take it upon themselves to spruik your music. C’est la vie. Maybe Lena Dunham was busy.

As triple j dug around to find out, the great minds behind ‘All Star’ actually have pretty decent taste in music — they’ve previously used their Twitter account to give love to acts like Wolf Alice and Car Seat Headrest.

And Alex seems pretty chuffed with the endorsement:

But exactly how did Smash Mouth happen upon the (very good) music of an artist from Melbourne? It might have something to do with the fact that Lahey is blowing up in the US right now — her track ‘Every Day’s The Weekend’ is currently #1 on the Sirius XM station Alternative National airplay charts, beating out the likes of The Killers, Manchester Orchestra and Jack Antonoff’s band Bleachers.

We have nothing further to add to this deeply weird piece of news.
