As Donald Trump’s presidential team begins to take shape, one of the most troubling appointments has been that of Steve Bannon as White House chief strategist. Bannon is the executive chairman of Breitbart, an inflammatory alt-right news website known for headlines like “Birth Control Makes Women Unattractive and Crazy” and “World Health Organization Report: Trannies 49 Xs Higher HIV Rate”.

Since news broke of Bannon’s new White House role, he’s been described by a number of news outlets as “controversial”. But on Monday night’s episode of Late Night, host Seth Meyers explained why that really doesn’t do Bannon justice. “He’s not controversial,” said Meyers of Bannon. “He’s a white nationalist and an anti-Semite. Don’t talk about him like he’s pineapple on pizza.”

Meyers also slammed senior Republican Paul Ryan for failing to condemn Bannon’s bigotry. “I’ve never met the guy, I don’t know Steve Bannon, so I have no concerns,” said Ryan in a recent interview. Meyers’ response to this? “I never met John Wilkes Booth, but I let his past work inform my opinion of him.”
