HBO Is Making A Documentary Series About Adnan Syed That Will Pick Up Where ‘Serial’ Left Off
'The Case Against Adnan Syed' is coming soon.
In news that trills the faint sounds of Squarespace ads, HBO and UK channel Sky have announced that their plans to release The Case Against Adnan Syed, a new doco-series inspired by the success of Serial’s first season.
The series, which isn’t associated directly with the podcast, will further explore the 1999 murder of 18-year-old Baltimore County high school student Hae Min Lee. Adnan Syed, Min Lee’s ex-boyfriend, was found guilty of her murder and convicted to life in prison the following year, at age 17.
The Case Against Adnan Syed will reportedly both re-examine events leading up to Lee Min’s disappearance and murder, and provide “ground-breaking revelations”. To this day, Syed maintains his innocence and in wake of the new evidence and interest provided from Serial, he currently awaits a retrial.
The docoseries is directed by Amy Berg, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 2006 for Deliver Us From Evil, an exposé sex abuse claims against the Catholic church. It’ll run for approximately four hours.
“We’ll be offering viewers a compelling window into one of the most talked about murder cases in recent years,” said Sky’s director of programming Zai Bennett. “The hugely talented Amy Berg has unprecedented access to those closest to the investigation, which is sure to make unmissable viewing.”
The score will head in its own direction too. While we might miss Serial‘s classic theme music, Nick Cave and experimental musician Warren Ellis are locked in to collaborate on the series’ almost-certainly-eerie soundscape.
Unfortunately, we might be waiting a while for the follow-up — no release date has been announced.
We also have little idea about Serial’s third season, though podcast creator Ira Glass has promised something “very different” after the divisive second season, which focused on disgraced US Army Soldier Bowe Bergdahl.
