Lorde’s sophomore album ‘Melodrama’ has received universal critical acclaim and it’s just become her first number one record on the Billboard music charts, after selling 109,000 album equivalent units (a measure that tracks both traditional album sales and streaming) in its first week.

Her performance at Glastonbury last weekend is also being hailed as “bold and brilliant”. Basically, she’s killing it.

But there’s one person apparently yet to be convinced of of her musical brilliance: Seal. Yeah, ‘Kiss From A Rose’ Seal.

The Voice coach used a performance by contestant Sarah Stone, who covered Lorde’s ‘Green Light’, as an opportunity to throw a significant amount of shade on the New Zealand artist.

The show’s host, Sonia Kruger, asked Seal if  Stone was “looking like the strongest female voice in the competition”.

“No. Look, Sarah, I really like you — I’ve told you that off set,” he replied. “I think you made the most of a not particularly good song. I’m not a big fan. I couldn’t sing that song because it wouldn’t inspire me, but I thought you did great.”

Hold up. “A not particularly good song”? “I’m not a big fan”? “It wouldn’t inspire me”?!

The last time Seal had a song that made it onto the Billboard 200 was 2003 when ‘Waiting For You’ made it to the dizzying heights of number 89. It’s fine if he doesn’t want to sing ‘Green Light’ because he doesn’t feel the lyrics or whatever, but there’s no need to sledge it as “not particularly good” when it is objectively… pretty fucking good.

Plenty of fans of The Voice were not into Seal’s take on Lorde.

“Not particularly good”. smh.
