You’ve probably not heard of The Voices, but it got a great reception when it premiered in Sweden back in October and the new trailer is gathering steam ahead of a US release in February. In a different take on the “nice guy becomes serial killer” chestnut, Ryan Reynolds plays an awkward, slightly unhinged dude who talks to his pets and seems a bit too unsurprised when they talk back. His dog seems quite nice, but his cat, just like cats in real life, is a bastard; it keeps telling him to kill people in a cheerful Scottish brogue. Incidentally, Reynolds voices both animals, so it’s kind of like he’s talking to himself on another level.

It also provides a surprisingly neat twist on the old and problematic “woman in refrigerators” trope, where a female character is brutally murdered to give the male protagonist some impetus to Do Stuff, Have Emotions, or otherwise move the story along. In this version, the woman may be in the fridge, but that’s not going to stop her being a fully-realised character, because her decapitated head talks and continues to be a big part of the movie.

The Voices has a February 6 premiere in the US.
