Russell Crowe has a rough go of things, you know. He’s an Oscar winner. He’s just directed and starred in a film about one of the nation’s most revered moments of military history. On screen, people let him play biblical legends, geniuses, and noble gladiators. His beloved South Sydney Rabbitohs have won the NRL Premiership by a hugely impressive margin. And yet, people are still hung up on his personal life. Would people get mad at Noah if he assaulted the odd hotel worker? Surely, people wouldn’t laugh at Maximus’ shitty garage band?

Now, after decades in the public’s cynically squinted eye, Crowe is taking to Channel Seven’s Sunday Night to set the record straight. Actually, all the cool kids are listening to his band. Who hasn’t gone into a blind rage and thrown a phone at someone’s face at least once? When it comes down to it, he’s just “sensitive”. Does NOBODY remember A Beautiful Mind?

The full interview with Seven’s Mike Willesee will air tomorrow night at 6.30pm, but today AAP have obtained some advance quotes from this, the most historic moment in television to date.

“I’m extremely sensitive and that’s probably where some of my negative stuff comes from,” says Crowe.

“I’m a little bit intuitive, so I know from a handshake whether somebody means me good or ill.”

“I never touched [the concierge] mate, never laid a finger on him, you know, did not physically hurt him.”

Putting aside the fact that you don’t need to lay a finger on someone to shotput a phone into their face, all this is pretty predictable. Crowe has a new film coming out and, for better or worse, this is the best way for him to get publicity. The man has an incredibly well-documented history of manipulating the media, and he knows that this is what they’re interested in.

Nonetheless, we’ll probably be watching. How this enigmatic ball of hulk rage and sub-par open-shirted dad rock can transform into a nuanced human on screen is one of the great mysteries of our time.
