As Australia is practically deafened by whispers of leadership challenges following one of the PM’s worst weeks on record, you would be forgiven for thinking that our country is plagued by a unique kind of absurdity. Australians are becoming increasingly disillusioned as #auspol quickly descends into what seems like a farcical self-parody and, with the Queensland state election campaign now finally at its end, things are worse than ever.

But fear not, you schadenfreude-loving weirdos, things are bad all over. As Capitol Hill suffer their worst approval ratings in recent history, the USA is also effortlessly careening towards mayhem as well.

In the lead-up to Groundhog Day next Monday  — I don’t think I fully realised till now that the film was based on a real thing — Public Policy Polling have surveyed more than 1,000 Pennsylvanians to gauge their feelings about everything from marriage equality to NFL to national politics to Punxsutawney Phil (the famous weather-predicting groundhog for which the day is celebrated).

As Time point out, despite the fact that only 8 percent of people believe the animal has any kind of skill in forecasting the weather, a whopping 50 percent think Phil “would do a better job than most current members of Congress”. 29 percent disagree completely, and a remaining 21 percent state they are “not sure”.

If that kind of thinking is representative of a larger sample, Punxsutawney Phil now has a higher approval rating than congress have maintained since the mid ’80s.

Proof.

More than that, the survey results indicate that support for the giant underground squirrel was offered from members of all of the major political parties with 61 percent of Democrats, 60 percent of independents and 56 percent of Republicans viewing him in a positive light.

Back home, early reports are indicating that the Sydney Seal has learned of Punxsutawney Phil’s success in the polls and is poised to take a bid at the LNP leadership.

Watch ya back, Tone.
