Pope Francis has compared some versions of abortion to Nazi-era practices, in a speech to one of the top Catholic organisations in Italy.

“I say it with pain. In the last century, the entire world was scandalised by what the Nazis did to ensure the purity of the race. Today we are doing the same thing, but with white gloves,” Francis said.

“Children should be accepted as they come, as God sends them, as God allows, even if at times they are sick,” he added.

Francis was speaking to the Forum delle Famiglie, an organisation which supports and promotes the interests of Catholic families.

According to Reuters, the Pope discarded his prepared speech and made the comments in a long, more relaxed discussion to the members present.

He specifically called out abortions that occurred once it was known whether the foetus had any health issues.

“I’ve heard that it’s fashionable — or at least habitual — to perform certain exams in the early months of pregnancy, to see if the baby is unwell or comes with a certain problem,” Francis said. “And to have an easy life, one does away with an innocent.”

The Nazis operated a program of eugenics, where they hoped to selectively breed out groups of people they did not wish to evolve with.

Last month, in a nation-wide referendum, 66 percent of Ireland’s voters ticked ballots in favour of legalising abortion.

In Australia, abortion has been a recent hot topic: last week, NSW parliament voted in favour of a piece of legislation that bans protests outside abortion clinics.

In their infamous interview with Channel 7, former deputy PM Barnaby Joyce and political staffer Vikki Campion revealed that they were encouraged by members of the Nationals party to seek an abortion.
