Many of us resolved to read more in 2018. Most of us were talking about books, but one brave punter just took on the UNO rulebook instead, and made a kind of startling discovery.

That is, they discovered that pretty much all of us have been playing UNO wrong for our entire lives. Here’s how:

You know the coveted, unfairly powerful Draw 4 Wild Card? As it turns out, you’re actually only allowed to play that card if you have no other playable cards in your hand.

And if you think you can just get away with cheating because no one else can see the other cards in your hand, think again. If another player suspects your Draw 4 Wild Card was played illegally, they’re allowed to challenge that, and you have to show them your hand. If they’re right, you draw 4. If they’re wrong, and you actually played it legally, the challenger draws 6.

This is, quite literally, a game-changer. Thanks to LaToya for taking one for the team and reading the rulebook — you can see photos of said rulebook in her original Facebook post below if you’d like some cold hard proof of your errors.

And here’s the rule thanks to UnoRules.com, and who are we to argue with them?
