Remember this tiny little ball of adorable quarter-life crisis?

cat

The cat was Marnie’s gift to herself in season three, episode five of Girls, after a particularly eventful week for the character: her awful music video went viral; she quit her job in a spat of rage; she let her friend’s ex-boyfriend neg her into some extremely clumsy sex. In that context, the spontaneous kitten adoption symbolised a few things: Marnie’s limited attention span, her self-sabotaging need to feel loved at all costs, and her inability to make decisions with an awareness of their consequences.

The cat, as our recapper Caitlin Welsh noted with growing urgency, was never seen again. #freemarniescat.

The hashtag failed to take off, as hashtags often do, but Caitlin persevered, contacting Marnie through the email address she supplied to Desi in season three, episode eight.

And this morning she got a reply.

Dear Marnie,
I know you’re a fictional character but I’m very worried about that cat you bought that we never saw again. If you could just give me a sign that his grumpy little face is OK and well-fed, I would sleep better at night.
Love,
A Fan

Hi Caitlin,

Thank you for your concern. As the constantly shifting demands of both my personal and professional lives have left my schedule cluttered with important commitments, my lifestyle has becomes less conducive to cat-rearing than I would’ve liked. He has found a safe home with my mom’s boss. Hope all is well on your end.

Be well,
Marnie
