The Oscar Nominations Are In And Yeah, It’s Mostly Just About ‘La La Land’

The old white men in charge of Hollywood have issued their annual decree, declaring categorically which were the best movies of last year. Yes, it’s Oscar nomination time. Forget your populist blockbusters, you unwashed proletariat scum. Deadpool? How dare you. It’s time to talk about serious cinema. Like La La Land. And some other stuff, I guess. But mostly La La Land.

The throwback musical scored a record-tying 14 nominations, a feat only Titanic and All About Eve have managed before. It’s up for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Song (for ‘City of Stars’), Best Original Song again (for ‘Audition’), Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. Okay guys, we get it, you were fans.

Losing to La La Land in the Best Picture category you’ll find Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, Lion, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight.

After back to back years of #OscarsSoWhite, the acting categories are a sea of diversity, with six whole people of colour. Six! More like #OscarsSoWoke.

Less woke: Mel Gibson is up for Best Director. Hollywood loves a comeback story, I guess.

Also Meryl Streep was nominated. Supposedly for her work in Florence Foster Jenkins, but we all know she really got the nod because people just want to hear her hang more shit on Donald Trump. For the record, that’s fine by me.

The winners of the 89th Academy Awards will be announced on February 28.
