We’re Losing It Over This Olympic Figure Skater Who Performed To A Swing Cover Of ‘Wonderwall’
Anyway, here's 'Wonderwall'.
We regret to inform you that today, in the year 2018, ‘Wonderwall’ began trending worldwide on Twitter — and it’s all figure skating’s fault.
See, the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games kicked off today, and there’s been a rule change this year: single figure skaters are now allowed to perform to music with lyrics. With great power comes great responsibility, but German skater Paul Fentz threw caution to the wind anyway and decided to perform to ‘Wonderwall’.
Not just any version of ‘Wonderwal’l, either. A swing cover of Wonderwall, performed by Paul Anka, which is truly a thing that exists. And people are losing their minds.

Play this version of Wonderwall in the lobby of my funeral.

A JAZZ COVER OF WONDERWALL?! Kick this guy out of the Olympics

So far in these Olympic Games, both a jazz rendition of “wonderwall” and a male cover of “1,000 years” have been played…clearly the motto is “bold moves only” in pyeong chang

I mean, figure skaters rehearse their routine to the same song dozens of times, probably hundreds. It raises a question I’m not sure I want to know the answer to: how many times has Fentz heard this song? Here’s a video of him performing to it at the European Championships earlier this year:
Sadly for Fentz, the routine didn’t go quite so well this time around — he fell twice, and scored a relatively low 66.32.
There’s a German guy who keeps falling as he’s skating to a swing version of Wonderwall. This whole routine is full of bad choices #WinterOlympics

Anyway, if this version of ‘Wonderwall’ happened to really speak to you, there’s good news — Paul Anka has an entire album of swing covers of classic rock songs, featuring ‘Eye of the Tiger’, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, ‘Everybody Hurts’, and ‘It’s My Life’. It’s really something, it’s called Rock Swings, and it’s on Spotify.
