OK Go Have Created A New Printer-Powered Psychedelic Video To Dazzle And Amaze
And it's eco-friendly too!
OK Go, the undisputed kings of the music video and also occasional musicians, have released a post-Thanksgiving clip for their song ‘Obsession’, and it’s a printer powered tornado of colour.
Known for creating elaborate low-fi choreographed spectacles, such as their famous treadmill-hopping video ‘Here It Goes Again’, or ‘This Too Shall Pass’ which takes the form of an astounding Rube Goldberg machine, or the dog-filled ‘White Knuckles’, their latest effort is similarly spectacular and intricate.
Using over 567 printers, a huge amount of paper and no CGI or graphic manipulations, the video creates beautiful walls of colour and patterns by simply syncing a wall of printers to spit out paper at the same time. However, it’s worth noting that the band recycled all of the paper and donated the proceeds of the video to Greenpeace, so I guess those trees didn’t die entirely for our entertainment.
OK Go also released a warning and a viewing guide on their YouTube channel, the first to warn people who may be susceptible to seizures to be careful due to the whirling storm of colour, the second to give those heedless of the dangers an optimal viewing experience.
“This video has a lot of flashing colors. If you’re susceptible to seizures, be careful, please. Your viewing experience will look significantly better if you manually set your YouTube resolution settings to 1440p or 2160p (for desktop, click the gear icon in the lower right). Just leaving it on “Auto HD” results in some pretty intense distortion during a few sections, because when the the colors and patterns get crazy, there’s actually just too much information flying by for YouTube’s normal HD compression. We broke the matrix. The good people of YouTube have been working with us to solve this (it’s a bit rate limitation issue) over the last 24 hours, but there’s no quick fix, and now it’s Thanksgiving in the US, and we’re all with our families.”
The only remarkable thing about this video is they got that many desk jet printers to work consistently over the course of the video shoot.

The song ‘Obsession’ is from their 2014 album Hungry Ghosts, but I guess clips like these take a few years to make? Watch the clip now and get ready to look at your humble laser printer in an entirely new light forever.
