Donald Trump is now the President-elect of the USA.  Yep, it actually happened.

This afternoon it was confirmed that Trump had won enough states to secure an electoral college majority of more than 270 votes, defeating Hillary Clinton. The state that finally pushed Trump over the line was Pennsylvania, an area that has voted Democrat for the past six presidential elections.

Pre-election polls showed Clinton with a majority of the national popular vote and sitting in pretty comfortable position to win the electoral college. But as results started to trickle through this morning it became clear that Trump had done better than expected, winning in states like Florida and North Carolina.

The ABC’s much loved election analyst, Antony Green, has also called the election for Donald Trump.

Clinton is still leading in the national vote, but the presidential election is decided according to the results in each state. At this stage Clinton has not formally conceded and Trump is yet to give a victory speech.

In case you weren’t feeling queasy enough, Trump’s win has been celebrated by One Nation here in Australia, who were filmed drinking champagne outside Parliament House.

No one is really sure how a Trump presidency is actually going to play out. Will be really try and ban Muslims? Is he going to construct a wall along the border with Mexico?

In addition to winning the presidency the Republicans have also secured a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, giving them total control of Congress.

Exit polls showed a massive gap between voters based on age, race and class. Despite his pretty solid win, Trump is inheriting a country more divided than ever.

Australia’s foreign minister, Julie Bishop, has already announced that the federal government is prepared to work with Donald Trump.
