Thunderstorms, Drizzle And A Cyclone: The NYE Weather Forecast For Australian Capital Cities

It’s that time of year, folks: just close enough to predict the New Year’s Eve weather by having a reasonably confident gander at the meteorological estimates for the day.

That’s right…it’s weather update time. Will we ring in the New Year with nice clear skies and lovely fireworks, or crappy drizzle quite literally dampening the mood of all your rooftop parties? The answer seems to be a bit of both, with a potential cyclone thrown in for some of us.

Here’s your NYE weather forecast for the capital cities, courtesy of the Bureau of Meteorology and other more knowledgeable sources than us:

Sydney (Or As The Promotional Posters Would Have You Call It, SydNYE)

It’s looking like bland drizzle for the NYE capital of the world, which is especially disappointing for all the extremely rich people who’ve paid for rooftop parties with harbour views.

The BoM suggests December 31 will be 20-25 degrees, with a 50% chance of rain and plenty of clouds. There’s always a chance it’ll clear by midnight, though. Fingers crossed.

Brisbane

Sorry Queensland, it’s gonna be a wet one. Specifically, the BoM is predicting 70-80% chance of showers from the 31st to the 1st, and a pretty high chance of more evening thunderstorms.

It’s probably not a great time for fireworks, but give it a crack and let us know how it goes (please don’t give it a crack leave the fireworks to the professionals)

Oh, and NYE is also going to hit a maximum of 34 degrees, so you can swelter in hellish humidity while enjoying the rain. Sorry.

Canberra

It’s going to pretty nice in Canberra, actually. Partly cloudy, top of 27 degrees, and only a 10% chance of rain. Sure, there’ll be no one in Canberra to celebrate with, but otherwise it should be a pretty sweet NYE.

Melbourne

Partly cloudy, 13-25 degrees — pretty similar to Canberra, actually, except more places to party.

Adelaide

See Melbourne (sorry, but it’s literally the same).

Hobart

Basically the same as Melbourne and Adelaide except slightly fewer clouds.

Darwin

Darwin looks set to be warm and partly cloudy, with a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm, or possibly both.

Perth

Perth emphatically wins this year’s New Years Eve Weather Competition, which is not a thing: a balmy 20-30 degrees, clear skies, zero chance of rain.

The only downside is that you guys will still be suffering through 2017 for another few hours after the east coast bids this shitty year goodbye. Sorry.

However, Western Australia is a big place, and way up the top bit, well away from Darwin, there is a cyclone warning currently in place for the next few days. If that sounds close to you, you can read the BoM’s warnings here.
