Mostly because they have absolutely no idea who he is.

Imagining Noel Fielding judging cakes on The Great British Bake Off feels like a drug hallucination, but that is the magnificent reality we are facing right now.

The comedian and actor has just been announced as a new co-host of everyone’s favourite soothing reality show which, if you haven’t watched Bake Off, is a delightful haze of polite English people trying to make profiteroles in the countryside. He will be joined by former QI host, Sandi Toksvig, who seems like a nice lady and a much more conventional choice.

Fielding seems like a strange choice for the gig, but an excitingly strange choice. The Mighty Boosh creator hasn’t been on TV in a regular capacity since 2015, when he finished a nine year panel spot on the famously mean and wonderful, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, and was a regular on The I.T Crowd before that.

When the news was announced this morning, Fielding remarked: “I’ve always loved brightly coloured cakes and Sandi Toksvig so this is a dream come true for me. It’s basically the double.”

He will be so weird on Bake Off and I am here for it.

Perhaps the strangest reaction to the Bake Off announcement — more than, ‘why the hell is Noel Fielding hosting a show about beautiful cakes’ — is that many corners of the internet (even British corners!) seem to have absolutely no idea who Noel Fielding is.

But?

We’ve already met them?

Twitter was similarly flabbergasted! And in some cases, bloody outraged.

Hopefully Fielding does well because if he doesn’t, he’ll have national incident on his hands.
