Next year will be the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, so there’s a lot of speculation about what the 2017 model will be like. Big changes are expected, and one idea that’s gaining credence in the tech industry rumour mill is that next year’s iPhone will have an all-glass case.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and podcast The Talk Show both have sources suggesting the 2017 iPhone will have an edge-to-edge display made entirely of glass, and now the chairman of an Apple supplier has backed up those claims. Allen Horng of Catcher Technology, who currently make the metal chassis for iPhones, told Nikkei Asian Review, “As far as I know, only one [iPhone] model will adopt glass casing next year.”

A move to a glass casing would make the iPhone more distinctive, but back when the iPhone 4 had glass front and back panels they did break very easily when dropped, even with a layer of stainless steel in the middle.

This year’s new model, the iPhone 7, isn’t expected to be a revolutionary redesign and will probably be much closer to current phones. However, one rumour doing the rounds as it that from the iPhone 7 onwards Apple will phase out headphone jacks, meaning listeners will have to use Bluetooth or the Lightning port to connect their headphones.
