A New Streaming Service Showing “Every Australian Film Ever Made” Will Launch On Australia Day

In a unusual move for streaming services in this country, next week there will be a new video-on-demand service called Ozflix, which will be singularly dedicated to only showing Australian films. The service boasts that it will begin with over 250 Australian films with ambitious plans to eventually stream every Australian film ever made.
“There are over 2000 Australian movies in existence, from the world’s first narrative feature film (The Story of the Kelly Gang, 1906) to modern classics like Crocodile Dundee and The Castle through to new releases such as The Dressmaker and Mad Max: Fury Road,” says Ozflix CEO Ron V. Brown. “We are committed to making each and every Australian feature film available.”
The lowdown is that you can pay $6.79 to stream a new release and $3.79 for all other films. Ozfix has announced that 50 percent of each rental fee will be paid directly to distributors or filmmakers, making it very unique in the streaming sphere.
Aside from offering movies, Ozflix also promises to show free content, such as FAQ, a show hosted by film critics like David Stratton in which critics, actors and directors discuss their favourite Australian films. It’ll be interesting to see how a Australian-only video-on-demand service stands up against Netflix and Stan.
