This is some serious 'Black Mirror' stuff.

Do I Date is a new app developed in the UK that lets you leave reviews for people you’ve been on dates with. You can also read reviews from other people so you can screen dates before you meet up with them.

The founders, Terry Amsbury and Jamie Forsyth, have called it “TripAdvisor for people”. And it sounds like some serious Black Mirror shit, tbh.

Transparency In The Dating World

According to the app store description, Do I Date claims to bring “unprecedented openness to the dating world”. You get to share your dating experiences with people, review your friends and find out extra stuff about potential dates that you won’t find on Tinder.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Terry Amsbury said, “When someone looks into buying a new phone they’ll read review after review. Yet they’re not doing that when meeting a stranger online for the first time. It’s mad.” The founders are hoping that this will make the world of dating much safer for everyone.

He added, “It takes away the conundrum whereby someone’s profile is different to the reality, because they’re being peer-reviewed. You try before you buy.” And it’s true, you never really know who you’re going to find when you meet up with a stranger from the internet.

You add people to the app via their number, meaning you have to know them first to set up a review. You can also only make one anonymous post per profile which means profiles stay as honest and balanced as possible.

The Problem With Ratings

But of course, as the Evening Standard points out, it could open up to avenues of online bullying and low self-esteem from a poor rating. Think of that Black Mirror episode where social ratings are currency and the protagonist goes crazy trying to stop a plummeting score. It was dark af.

Look, if this app makes it safer for people to date each other then we’re all for it! And it’ll definitely be interesting to see how it pans out. It’s only been up and running for eight weeks now with 500 active users. It’s currently only available in the UK but depending on its success, we could see it hit Australia sometime soon.
