Today the MTV Movie Awards were broadcast and look, they were okay! Everybody seems to have got out unscathed.

Presented without context:

Aside from the Suicide Squad and the Fantastic Beasts trailers dropping, other stuff happened too! The major awards of the night were won by The Force Awakens, which won Movie of the Year, Straight Outta Compton, which won Best True Story, and by Leo DiCaprio and Charlize Theron who won Totally Best Actor/Actress In A Rad Downloadable Mov’, or whatever hip term MTV prefers.

Hosts Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnston and Kevin Hart began the night with a pretty daggy rap, that was ultimately saved by the burn that this award show celebrates movies that people have “actually seen”. Take that, Oscars voters who definitely aren’t watching this! Their rap repeated the refrain: “Leo got fucked by a bear”, in reference to The Revenant or a crazy night in Las Vegas. Edgy stuff.

Melissa McCarthy won Best Comedic Genius award, and she made a very funny and heartwarming speech about the other female comics who have inspired her. “I may be the first woman to win this award, but I am certainly not the first one to deserve it,” she said.

“I am only here because Carol Burnett, Jane Curtin, Phyllis Diller, Whoopi Goldberg, Teri Garr, Madeline Kahn, Lucille Ball, Gilda Radner, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Diane Keaton, Tracy Ullman, Bette Midler, Lily Tomlin, and my mom … taught me not to fear being the butt of the joke, taught me not to worry about being likable or perfect, and to lovingly go for the kill.” Aw.

Ryan Reynolds used his acceptance speech for Best Comedic Performance for Deadpool to remind everyone that he regularly has sex with Blake Lively. “Everything I do is to make her laugh,” he said. “Especially the sex.” Yeah, we get it, pal. His bit was also accompanied by a quick performance by Salt-N-Pepa though, which would maybe make sense if I had seen Deadpool. Soz!

Lonely Island did a sweet and earnest tribute to Will Smith, who won the Generation Award (are you kidding me with these awards?) and introduced himself as “the Karate Kid‘s dad” in reference to the 2010 remake starring Jaden Smith, which you probably didn’t see. The tribute was very straight, and very cute.

The confusion about the ‘why’ of the MTV Movie Awards was echoed by “cool mom” Amy Poehler, who won Best Virtual Performance (!!!???) for Inside Out and said: “Wait, does anyone vote for this? I don’t know”. None of us know how this works, Amy! She did get a chance to shout out her former Parks and Recreation co-star Chris Pratt (who won Best Action Performance) though.

Did you know that the MTV Movie Awards has a Best Kiss award! You betcha, it does! This year Rebel Wilson and Adam DeVine won it for Pitch Perfect.

(Gotta say though, it’s got nothing on the onscreen kisses back in my day. Look how shocked Lindsay Lohan is!)

So there you are, that’s pretty much everything of note that happened at the 2016 MTV Movie Awards. At the end of the day, everyone who you thought would win did, and we all vowed to never ever watch the new Divergent trailer ever again.
