Frank and Claire Underwood have absolutely nothing on the original power-couple.

There are plenty of reasons to go slightly mad with anticipation after watching the first US trailer for the upcoming Macbeth film adaptation. The sinister, otherworldly moodiness is bone-chilling, the cinematography is fucking stunning, and a wild-eyed, shirtless Michael Fassbender rises slowly from a freezing river. Here is a GIF of that moment, you’re welcome.

MacDamn.

But more than that, Fassbender and Marion Cotillard make the titular duo into the archetypal tortured power-couple they’re meant to be — the perfect combination of ambitious and conflicted, good and evil. Frank Underwood’s a ruthless bastard, but even he never stabbed his best friend in the chest while the guy was sleeping.

And Cotillard’s Lady Macbeth puts Claire Underwood in the shade, which is an astonishing achievement in itself because no one puts Claire Underwood in the shade. Claire Underwood is the ultimate shade-putter-inner, and she’s just been out-shade-putted. If these two met in real life the sheer level of icy side-eye would drop the planet’s average temperature by several degrees.

I am going to see the hell out of this movie.

Incidentally, Google unleashed this devastating own on me when I went to find domestic release dates for this movie, presumably because I said some mean things about their logo change this morning.

I am on my way to the nearest burns unit as we speak. Ten, fifteen percent chance of survival, max.
