Remember in December last year, when you were just going about your business doing your thing and then suddenly everyone started yelling on Twitter and screaming on Facebook and pushing each other into roadside bushes because it turned out, out of nowhere, Beyonce had just released a whole entire album, and every song came with a film clip?

Well, an extremely understated, lo-fi, bedroom folk version of that exact thing just happened again — but this time it came from everyone’s favourite mumbling pile of awkward hilarity, Michael Cera.

true that, which is currently streaming for free on his bandcamp, dapples sound experiments, instrumental interludes and audio samples between shakily-sung folk songs (‘Clay Pigeons’ cover; ‘Ruth’; ‘Steady Now’) and eclectic, oddball moments (‘What Gives’).

It’s basically everything you’d expect from a Michael Cera album, right down to the way it was announced:

This isn’t the first time the Arrested Development, Juno and Scott Pilgrim star has showcased his musical talent; he added backing vocals and guitar to Weezer’s 2010 album Hurley, and played live bass in Mister Heavenly, an indie super group that also featured members Honus Honus from Man Man, Nicholas Thorburn from Islands and The Unicorns, and Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse and The Shins.

Also, there was this scene.

To stream the full album, or buy it for US$7, head to Michael Cera’s bandcamp.
