What if Best in Show, but for bakers? That seems to be the basic premise of Cook Off!, a long-delayed mockumentary starring Melissa McCarthy that is finally set to see the light of day.

When I say it’s long-delayed, I’m not kidding around: the cooking contest spoof, about a group of amateur bakers fighting it out for a million-dollar prize, had its world premiere at the US Comedy Arts Festival in Colorado back in 2007.

The fact that it’s taken a decade for the film to get a release doesn’t exactly bode well for its quality, although apparently it’s since been re-edited, so who knows.

Either way, it’s certainly a trip to see a pre-Bridesmaids McCarthy doing her thing. She’s playing an aspiring baker called Amber Strang who attempts to impress the judges with a dish made with sweet potato, marshmallow and chocolate. I for one am very much on board.

Cook Off! hits cinemas in the US on November 17.
