If you’re a fan of ’80s action blockbusters, then you probably love Lethal Weapon. Mel Gibson’s crazy eyes, Danny Glover’s weary admission that he’s “too old for this shit”, two Vietnam War veterans who become unlikely allies — it’s a great story!

Well, because this is the era of just recycling stuff that used to be good, there will soon be a Lethal Weapon TV show which transfers the ’80s storyline into the modern day. It stars Clayne Crawford (from Rectify) as Mel Gibson’s character Martin Riggs, and Damon Wayans Sr (from being Coach on New Girl‘s actual dad) as Danny Glover’s Roger Murtaugh, and judging by the trailer these two men are trying very hard to recreate that buddy cop charisma that made Lethal Weapon such a success.

In the first minute of the trailer, Martin Riggs shoots four people, eats a slice of pizza that one of the dead men is holding, and blows up a bank. Roger Murtaugh is gobsmacked!

Basically, it seems very schlocky but who knows if this will work to its advantage (their boss is played by Kevin Rahm who is Ted from Mad Men, which could be interesting). Looks like there’s gonna be a lot of shooting, cars crashing through walls and people discussing how batshit crazy Martin Riggs is. Man, that guy is mental!

Release dates haven’t been confirmed yet, but Lethal Weapon will come out some time this year.
