Someone In NZ Tricked Everyone Into Thinking Lorde Performed At An Auckland Library

Lorde: "This is deeply fake news, but quite cute."

One of the appeals of No Lights No Lycra is that you can feel free to move and express yourself without inhibition. The dance event — which originated in Melbourne and has since spread around the world — is run entirely in the dark. Turns out that feature also allows you to sneak in impersonators and convince everyone into thinking a pop megastar dropped by for an impromptu performance in a library! Cool, good to know.

This is exactly what happened on Monday night in New Zealand:

After advertising a “special guest” that you will “NOT want to miss”, No Lights No Lycra at Auckland’s Grey Lynn library fooled the people in the room into thinking Lorde had shown up to perform her new hit ‘Green Light’. Many people in attendance (including NZ musician Nadia Reid) took to social media to rave about the live performance, though some of those messages have now been deleted since the truth came out.

The performer was actually a (pretty talented!) impersonator named Hannah Horsfield and Lorde was eating Creme Eggs with her mum on the other side of the world.

we in london and i got my creme egg beeetch ?

Lorde addressed the reports on Twitter calling it “deeply fake news but quite cute”.

It sounds like the tribute artist did a pretty great job, but the news wouldn’t have been all that hard to believe in theory. Lorde is from Takapuna which is on Auckland’s North Shore, and she’s well-known for her hometown love and antics. After winning a Grammy in 2014, she took out a full-page ad in The New Zealand Herald to publish a handwritten thank you note. Before the release of ‘Green Light’, Lorde ran a scavenger hunt around Auckland with small previews of the track.

Oh well! At least this whole thing is a gift to NZ comedians and people who still like to reference South Park.
