A same-sex couple from Queensland woke up last week to find one of their tyres slashed and a threatening note left outside their house, the ABC reports. This is the note from the homophobic attack:

It shows the rainbow flag crossed out, and reads:

“Lesbianism is an abhorrent practice; a vile perversion that is often accompanied by mental health problems including substance abuse, depression and higher levels of domestic violence than heterosexual couples.”

“Sickheads!” The note continues. “Depraved sexual practices lead to self-destructive attitudes. Get away from the filth!”

That morning, the couple also noticed that one of their car’s tyres had been slashed.

The police were called over the incident. The ABC reported that the couple have had to put in new security cameras, lighting and fencing because of the threatening incidents.

The couple, who were not named, urged anyone who had faced any attacks similar to theirs to speak to the police.

In recent months, abuse towards LGBTIQ+ individuals has re-emerged as a sustained problem. This is, of course, in large part due to the months of struggle that many in the community went through due to last year’s postal vote on same-sex marriage.

This month, prominent rugby player Israel Folau wrote on his Instagram that gay people will go to hell.

Near the end of last year, Kevin Rudd’s godson was attacked in Brisbane for “standing up for #MarriageEquality”.
