‘Law And Order: SVU’ Is Making A Trump-Inspired Episode, Because That’s The Way Things Are Now
It will be about a politician and some "damaging accusations".
When Julie Louis-Dreyfus won an Emmy for best comedy actress a few weeks ago, she said in her acceptance speech: “I’d like to take this time to personally apologise for the current [election]… I think that Veep has torn down the wall between comedy and politics. Our show started out as political satire but it now feels like a sobering documentary.”
Everyone laughed because that Elaine is so funny, but really the whole world has gone through a cycle of being amused and then deeply concerned and now, relieved, that reality TV star Donald Trump will probably not be America’s next president. Probably not.
Waleed Aly Has Called Out The Media For Treating Donald Trump Like A Joke
In a ‘isn’t this too soon?’ move, the producers of Law and Order: SVU have announced that they are actually planning an episode inspired by Trump and the damning tapes that leaked over the weekend. In the episode, Gary Cole (from Veep, no less!) will play a politician who is ruined when a group of women “go public with damaging accusations”. It will air in the US on October 26, two weeks before Americans go to the polls.
Law and Order‘s whole thing is using relevant and up-to-the-minute stories ripped from the headlines, but this kind of feels like it’s a little too soon. I wonder what Detective Olivia Benson will make of all of it.
