Our hero Larry Wilmore, former late-night host and generally stand-up guy, is making headlines today after a fiery appearance on last night’s Real Time with Bill Maher. Wilmore, who appeared as a panellist alongside racist troll Milo Yiannopoulos, gave the scumbag a record dressing down on the HBO show after Yiannopoulos made several derogatory remarks about trans people and comedian Leslie Jones.

In a stunning take down, Wilmore took Yiannopoulos to task for his hateful and unsubstantiated remarks about trans people, who the alt-right troll called “confused”. Yiannopoulos defended his recent verbal attack on a trans woman at a university. “I make no apologies for protecting women and children from men who are confused about their sexual identity,” Yiannopoulos remarked, in a statement that shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the nuances of gender identity and the trans plight. He then joked about misgendering the trans woman in question, sneering, “I did that on purpose”.

Wilmore made several admirable attempts to debate Yiannopoulos, and to cut through the nauseating circle jerk of Maher, Yiannopoulos and Republican congressman Jack Kingston attacking the trans community, whom Maher offhandedly referred to as “weirdos”. When Yiannopoulos interrupted Wilmore, he fired back, “Let me finish my thought, please”. Wilmore went on to explain some of the problems facing marginalised communities, while Yiannopoulos pouted like a toddler on a time out.

A rational man who is active listening.

Fellow panellist Malcolm Nance, a retired intelligence analyst, jumped in to assist Wilmore, asking Yannopoulos, “You’re talking about confusion. Were we talking about you? Because you sound very confused”. When Yiannopoulos quipped that Maher “need[s] to start inviting higher IQ guests” on his show, Wilmore replied, “First of all, you can go fuck yourself, all right?”

Wilmore continued, “If your argument is that these people are stupid, you didn’t hear a word this man [Nance] said earlier this segment. Because he can talk circles around your pathetic, douchey little ass from England, all right?”

Wilmore went on to defend actor and comedian Leslie Jones, who fell victim to Yiannopoulos and his troll army when they tweeted torrents of racist hate speech at her online. The attack, which was organised by Yiannopolous, earned him a lifetime ban from Twitter and (unfortunately) the notoriety that lands him on your newsfeed every couple of weeks. “And one last thing,” Wilmore added, sounding Yiannopoulos’s death knell. “Leslie Jones is not ‘barely literate.’ Go fuck yourself again for that one, okay. She is a very thoughtful person, and very friendly.”

The Real Time episode had gained notoriety before it even aired, when Intercept founder, Jeremy Scahill, who was scheduled to appear on the panel as well, cancelled his appearance in protest. Scahill explained that debating Yiannopoulos would be pointless. Judging by the alt-right scumbag’s snide performance on last night’s Real Time, Scahill was bang on.

This is not even the first time this year that a protest concerning Yiannopoulos has made headlines. Just last month, feminist academic and author Roxane Gay pulled her book from the publisher Simon & Schuster after it was announced they would be publishing a book by Yiannopoulos, who is an editor at the alt-right hell den Breitbart. Gay was not the only one to protest the book deal; the Chicago Review of Books announced that it would not review a single Simon & Schuster book in 2017 “in response to this disgusting validation of hate”.
