Lana Del Rey Covered An Andrew Lloyd Webber Classic And It’s Perfect, Of Course
Well, this was unexpected.
When you think about it, Lana Del Rey and musical theatre have a lot in common: they’re endlessly dramatic, they love a good costume, and at some point we doubted whether their stories were real.
So it was only a matter of time until the US popstar tried her hand at a theatre classic, and today she’s delivered — sharing a cover of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s iconic ballad ‘You Must Love Me’.
The track comes from the musical Evita — which follows the story of divisive Argentinian figure Eva Perón — and was originally recorded by none other than pop icon Madonna, who starred as Perón in the 1996 film version. If the musical doesn’t sound ring a bell, you’d probably still be familiar with its most famous track: ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina‘.
Del Rey’s cover will be part of a new compilation album titled Unmasked: The Platinum Collection, which will honour Lloyd Webber’s contribution to the musical theatre canon. She’s not the only popstar tapped for the album: Beyonce has reportedly covered The Phantom Of The Opera’s ‘Learn To Be Lonely’.
Oddly enough, the singer recently revealed that she was approached to write a musical for Broadway — and she’s already started it.
“I was asked to write a musical, which I’ve started,” she told L’Officiel. “I may finish in two or three years. Me and Rick [Nowels, collaborator] have written something, so we’ll see.”
Del Rey will land in the country at the end of this month for her first Australian tour in nearly six years, playing shows in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne — head here for all the details.
