Filmmaker Kevin Smith says he is “ashamed” to be associated with producer Harvey Weinstein, and has pledged to donate all future profits from the films they worked on together to charity.

Smith worked with Weinstein on a number of his early movies including Clerks, Chasing Amy and Dogma, and has credited the Hollywood mogul for helping launch his career. But after a number of women came forward and accused Weinstein of sexual harassment and assault, Smith said it was clear he had been “singing the praises of somebody that I didn’t fucking know.”

“My entire career is tied up with the man,” said an emotional Smith during a live recording of his podcast, Hollywood Babble-On. “Everything I did in the beginning has his name on it. And I spent many years lionising him, telling stories.”

“I’m not a victim in this,” he added. “This is not about me at all. We know who the victims are.”

“I just wanted to make some fucking movies. That’s why I came, that’s why I made Clerks. And no fucking movie is worth all this. Like, my entire career, fuck it, take it. It’s wrapped up in something really fucking horrible.”

Smith also denied knowing about Weinstein’s alleged behaviour.

“I didn’t know the man that they keep talking about in the press,” he said. “Clearly he exists, but that man never showed himself to me.”

As a result of the allegations against Weinstein, Smith said that he would donate the residuals from the movies they made together to Women in Film, a non-profit organisation that helps women get their start in the entertainment industry. He also pledged to give an additional $2,000 to the organisation every month for the rest of his life.

“Hopefully that goes to people who get to make shit without having to deal with some fucking animal saying ‘here’s the price’,” he said.
