Kevin Rudd as Judd Nelson is something you just can't unsee.

Last month thousands tuned in to the ABC’s much-hyped series The Killing Season with the hope of gaining a richer understanding of the recent history of the Labor Party. With exclusive interviews with both Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard there was real potential for the show to provide new insight and contextualise a series of political implosions which have gravely impacted the party to this day.

Instead, what viewers received was the televisual equivalent of a wild possum and a brown snake fighting inside a cardboard box on the side of the road. With a combative he-said-she-said format and both Julia and K Rudd refusing to back down from their well-worn arguments, it made for some ridiculous viewing that inevitably left you feeling sad and dirty. Labor somehow came off looking worse than ever, two of our recent Prime Ministers were reduced to nothing more than snarky children, and you had successfully squandered a precious night of your young life.

In case you missed it, our favourite video editor Huw Parkinson has summed everything up in a tight two minutes through the much more satisfying form of The Breakfast Club. First impressions: Julia Gillard makes a pretty great Molly Ringwald, and your sex life will be on indefinite hiatus once the image of Kevin Rudd swaggering around in a denim jacket and fingerless gloves has been forcibly seared into your brain. Enjoy!
