John Oliver’s Ferguson Segment Is As Brilliant And Depressing As You’d Expect
Comedy aside, John Oliver's probably one of the best journalists out there at the moment.
Since Last Week Tonight began back in April, John Oliver’s tackled some of the big taboos in American society that very few mainstream outlets seem up to talking about; race, poverty, class and the power of big money over politicians have all gotten a thorough going-over.
Now Oliver’s turned his rapidly-evolving style on the events that have rocked the town of Ferguson, Missouri, since black teenager Michael Brown was shot and killed by a white police officer a week ago. Police brutality, America’s treatment of its citizens of colour, the arbitrary power given to men with little training and less empathy — all of it gets exposed and eviscerated by Oliver, who is quickly becoming one of America’s most valuable sources of real journalism as well as comedy.
