A new miniseries is about to begin on Foxtel, and it looks a hell of a lot like a bizzaro House Of Cards. Gaining inspiration from political novels The Mandarin Code and The Marmalade Files by Australian journalists Chris Uhlmann and Steve Lewis, Secret City follows a political journalist in Canberra who has started to see the underbelly of the government. Conspiracy! Secrets! Tension! Excitement! Flags!

The trailer released this past week is full of tense music and dark scenes of everyone side-eyeing each other, posing the question ‘aren’t you interested?’ It’s definitely shaping up to be Australia’s bid to jump on that tasty political-thriller bandwagon.

Secret City has a strong cast including Anna Torv (Fringe), Jackie Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook, Gracepoint), and Alex Dimitriades (The Slap, Underbelly), and was written by a team from Matchbox Pictures, including Marieke Hardy (!!!). There’s also an inclusion of a transgender woman in the group of main characters — nice — but is played by a cis-gender man — hmm. Time will tell how that pans out.

Secret City premieres on Foxtel’s Showcase at 8.30pm, June 5.
