You Can Now Rent Out An Ikea Showroom. To Sleep In.

This is just like that nightmare you had.

Stepping across the threshold of IKEA is like stepping into a maze – a maze that’s near impossible to exit without circling it continuously, getting horrifically lost, and having that moment of panic set in when you wonder what it would be like to be stuck in there forever, surrounded by furniture with names that sound like Swedish metal bands.

At least now you’ll have a place to crash.

Airbnb have teamed up with IKEA in Tempe, Sydney for a one-night stunt showcase IKEA’s 2015 catalogue, and “celebrate its support for the sharing economy”: one night of free accommodation in the IKEA showroom, offered to three groups of four guests on August 31.

But there’s a few catches: to enter the draw, you first have to sign up to the (fairly controversial) accommodation rental service, which will set you back $11AUD. And you also have to answer two questions: ‘Which town/city do you live in?’ and ‘Tell us about your family?’

So, that’s creepy.

The night will be ‘hosted’ by a popular AirBnB host, who will be fitting the room out to feel more like home. And then comes something a bit stranger: “By entering, you agree to be part of an event that will be covered by the media. Oh, and that you will be woken in the morning in a remarkable way.”

A remarkable way? Media coverage? This just sounds like a reformatted version of Big Brother except with no showering or bathing facilities. And considering winners have to remain on site from 5pm on Sunday until 12pm the next day, this sort of stinks.

If you’re keen, head to AirBnB to check out the listings — but don’t say we didn’t warn you.
