Here’s Tina Fey And Maya Rudolph Singing A Daggy Medley Because… Nah, You Don’t Need A Reason

If Maya Rudolph's new show is all this, I'm totally on board.

SNL alum and all-round excellent human Maya Rudolph has recently kicked off her own variety show in the US. Co-presented with Martin Short (yes, he’s still doing stuff; no, I don’t know if that’s a good thing) Maya and Marty has premiered to mixed reviews. Much like its 2014 predecessor, the one-off special The Maya Rudolph Show, the show hasn’t quite found its groove and is jammed full of a fun but ultimately confused mixture of skits, interviews and songs.

While that may not sound so great, it does mean we’re about to get a deluge of Maya Rudolph’s face all over our feeds as the individual clips are posted online — a fact I’m very okay with. And, on that note, here she is teaming up with long-time bud Tina Fey for the kind of equally lovely and cringeworthy karaoke set your mum and aunty pull out after a few too many Sauvy Bs at Christmas lunch. (The goods start from around the two-minute mark).

On the one hand, their earnest talk about worshipping and emulating great female entertainers like Carol Burnett, Cher and Marie Osmond gives me hope that the show still has the potential to channel the greatness of the variety genre and re-work it for contemporary audiences. On the other, the bit just isn’t as good as them singing about the fact their baby bumps are proof of them getting laid on SNL.
