A couple of months ago, Optus issued a callout for original five-minute films about Connecting Lives, offering a cool US$30,000 for the best one. Now, two of the best Australian submissions have been picked and are heading to Southeast Asia for the competition’s grand final. The creators of both have pocketed AU$5,000 along the way.

Judging by the final works, they definitely deserve it.

That was Jason van Genderen’s devastating Life In Boxes. The short film shows the real-life reactions of 30 people as they open a life-altering letter, putting your favourite unboxing clips to shame.

There’s also Dark Matter, a chilling horror short by siblings Jacob and Luci Trevaskis which centres itself upon the topic of mental health. (Content warning: the clip makes reference to self-harm and depression).

Needless to say, van Genderen and the Trevaskis’ are stoked to see their films heading to the grand final, where they’ll be up against winners from Africa, India, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia. We wish them the best of luck, and we’re keen to have our own viewing sesh once the finalist line-up is announced!
