The Gang’s Back Together In The First Trailer For The ‘Trainspotting’ Sequel
Choose life.
Renton, Spud, Sick Boy, Diane and Begbie are back, in the first trailer for director Danny Boyle’s follow-up to his 1996 cult hit Trainspotting.
The trailer begins with a modern update on the original film’s iconic “choose life” monologue in which an older but not necessarily wiser Renton (Ewan McGregor) tells viewers to “choose Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and hope that someone, somewhere cares”, all while the familiar strains of Underworld’s ‘Born Slippy’ play in the background.
Why Trainspotting still matters 20 years on
We learn that Renton no longer takes heroin, and that he hasn’t seen Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller) in 20 years. It also looks as though Begbie (Robert Carlyle) is still a violent sociopath, which doesn’t exactly bode well for Renton given how the two characters left things.
Boyle doesn’t look like he’s missed a step either, packing the trailer with tons of cool visual flourishes and drug-taking montages that made the first film so memorable.
T2 Trainspotting hits cinemas in Australia on February 9, 2017.
