Australia’s first ever MTV Unplugged is almost here — and by the looks of this sneak peek, we’re in for quite the show.

Last month, Gangs Of Youths and Amy Shark filmed sets at Melbourne’s Meat Market. Ahead of its debut this Sunday evening, MTV Australia has shared Gang Of Youths’ opening track, a stripped-down version of their smash hit ‘Let Me Down Easy’, which you can watch below.

In it, frontman David Le’aupepe takes centre-stage without his band, backed up with horns and a string quartet. It’s a stunning rendition, and charming as all-hell too: La’aupepe breaks out a couple of melodramatic moves and cracks a joke or two when he stumbles on some lines. That’s live TV, baby.

While most live-music lovers are still holding out for a Recovery revival that’s almost definitely never happening, Australia’s got a few live music shows in the works at the moment. In addition to MTV Unplugged (which hopefully will have more editions in the future), Channel 9 recently launched Adelaide-based Jam Live which has so far features performances from San Cisco and Boo Seeka.

Talking to Music Junkee last month, the ABC also re-affirmed their commitment to broadcasting live music on TV, promising “new concepts”.

You can catch Gang Of Youths’ full performance on MTV this Sunday 19 August at 6pm, with Amy Shark’s episode airing on September 16. In the meantime, watch ‘Let Me Down Easy’ below.
