Spoiler for Game of Thrones! Also sorry for the pervy Tyrion pic — it’s better than spoiling who’s banging for people who haven’t seen yet.

The first part of Game of Thrones I ever saw was a sex scene. And yes, considering basic rules of probability, that shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Specifically, this scene was the one in which Melisandre saunters around Stannis Baratheon with her boobs out, talking about how shit his infertile wife is, before he grabs her and they fuck on a large table of small wooden ships and she gets impregnated with a shadow baby.

This is how I stumbled across the show — as my boyfriend watched alone in our living room — in its second season, and it informed a large part of my understanding of it. Dim lights. Menacing music. Bad people. And importantly, people using sex as an instrument of power or domination.

That last point in particular is something that would plague the show, in many forms, over the next five years. But it couldn’t be further from the scene in this week’s episode.

If you’re reading this post, you know the good news: Missandei and Grey Worm did it. They did it. They did it after years of flirting. They did it next to a fire, in warm light, in a place they’re unlikely to get murdered halfway through. They did it and the dramatic music was cut so you could only hear their breath and kisses. They did it like Jack and Rose did it in the back of a car in Titanic but this time you got to see a woman receiving oral sex. You guys, they did it.

“Are we gonna do it?”

“We’re doing it.”

Game of Thrones has had good sex scenes before (hey Robb and Talisa, Daenerys and Daario, ALMOST Renly and Loras) but it feels like it’s been awhile between drinks and fans are thirsty as hell.

The scene is also particularly notable as one between two people of colour. It’s a rarity on a show that’s consistently criticised (as recently as this week) for its lack of diversity. And hell yeah, it’s a welcome addition.

Game of Thrones seems to be actively addressing some criticisms of the show over the past season or so — particularly in regards to (… white) women. Women are ruling. Women are fighting. Women are leading the charge. It’s nice to see them throw us a similar bone in the bedroom (lol). Missandei and Grey Worm’s sex scene is being hailed as “a stand for female pleasure in bed”.

That’s true, and definitely important. But the most striking thing for me was the vulnerability from both of them. It’s nice to see Game of Thrones remember that sex isn’t always about violence or betrayal or power; it can also be about two little cuties growing close, learning all about one another, and having an extremely nice time.

… One of them is totally about to die, aren’t they?
