Five things you should prioritise in your 20s
It’s been discussed time and time that your 20s are a crucial decade that will shape you and the years that follow. Knowing this can seem a little daunting when your 20s feel like one big screw up. But if you make these seemingly small changes to your life now, you’d be amazed at how big the flow-on effect can be. Prioritise these things in your 20s if you want to get ahead.
Friends over relationships
It’s fine to have a significant other all throughout your 20s – you don’t have to abide by the idea that you have to be single to have fun. But if you start prioritising that relationship over your friends, then there’s an issue. Naturally you might see them more, but make sure you don’t neglect those friendships. Whether you end up breaking up or staying together, you’ll regret it if you enter your 30s and you have no real friendships.
Your health
It can be easy in your 20s to have a non-stop schedule between uni, work and your social life, which often means your health gets neglected. That means trading good food for the quick, easy and unhealthy option. If you don’t get into good habits now, it can be hard to break the bad habits later. Make sure you give yourself some time within your busy schedule to relax get outside to exercise and soak up that vitamin D – your body will thank you.
Travel
You might think you don’t have the time or the money to travel, but now is really the best time to do it. You have so many opportunities when you’re young, particularly with exchange programs that will give you that six month or year overseas without falling behind on your degree. Centrelink will help you out if you’re worried about the cost too, and it’s worth working a few extra shifts to afford the trip of a lifetime.
'You' time
As well as your physical health, it’s so important to look after your mental wellbeing. If you’re constantly on the go and never giving yourself any downtime, you’ll burnout and it will seriously impact your mental health. Make sure you give yourself time to do nothing or do the things that relax you the most. For some that could just be simply reading a good book in a quiet space, or for others it might be worth checking out meditation or yoga.
Figuring out your passions
This doesn’t mean you have to have it figured all out in your early 20s. Now is the time to reflect and sort your life out so you know what you want to do. It should be a priority now so you can start making changes and taking steps towards your goals. Ignoring your true passion and putting it aside will only prolong your happiness – better to act now so you can get to that goal so much sooner.
