Here Are Five Very Good Reasons You Should Check Out The Other Art Fair This Weekend
Globetrotting art festival The Other Art Fair is coming to Melbourne for the very first time this May. Presented by Saatchi Art, the travelling fair brings art culture, new artists, and art buying to a new generation.
The Other Art Fair is also held in London, Bristol and New York, and 2017 marks the third year it’s taking place in Australia. Here are five reasons you should head out and check it out this weekend.
#1 Get To Know Upcoming Artists
From the outside, the art world often appears to be dominated by established names with little room for newcomers. The Other Art Fair is an incredible opportunity to get to know what’s going on in the art world around us, right now. 100 emerging artists will be participating in the fair, with many of them appearing at the festival to explain their work in their own words. Meanwhile, the accompanying online gallery features more than 60,000 emerging talents across drawing, sculpture, photography and painting.
#2 It’s Perfect For First Time Buyers And Sellers
The world of purchasing art might feel almost impossible to understand for a new buyer or seller but the Other Art Fair aims to create a welcoming environment for those dipping their toes into buying art for the first time. Free advisory services will help curious buyers, as well as upcoming artists who want to learn more about how to turn their creativity into a trade. Best of all? A wide selection of artworks will be available for every kind of budget.
#3 The Other Projects Is A One-Of-A-Kind Experience
The Other Projects is a site-specific part of the Fair, unique to each particular location and venue, and separate from the core exhibition. The Melbourne edition will host a series of exciting installations, including immersive art and dining ‘experiences’, a hidden Green Room absinthe bar, the chance to play with virtual reality technology, taxidermy classes, and even live tattooing courtesy of Little Tokyo.
#4 There’s Eating, Drinking And Dancing
Food, drinks and music will be available to whet every appetite at the art exhibition and installations. On the drinks front, Kirin and Jacobs Creek will be providing the drinks alongside food trucks, coffee, and more. Meanwhile, a fully curated music program will feature live music, DJs and performance art. The music will come courtesy of RRR’s Simon Winkler and Lauren Taylor, The Harpoons, and a performance from Marcus Encel of Blender Studios.
#5 You Can Even Make Some Art Of Your Own
If a stroll through the exhibition makes you wish you could make art yourself, this could be your big chance. Classes and hands-on workshops will be on offer throughout the weekend, along with guided tours and talks. Workshops including semi-nude life drawing, pop art painting with Vanessa Bradley and a watercolour and wine class with Nicole Black.
