Psst, Beyoncé And Jay-Z Sampled A Band From Melbourne On ‘Everything Is Love’
Now THAT'S a shoutout.
It’s been two days since Beyoncé and Jay-Z scuppered everyone’s Sunday with the surprise release of their collaborative album Everything Is Love — and seeing as most of you have spent that time complaining about having to sign up to Tidal to listen to the damn thing, there’s a good possibility you’ve missed the record’s special Australian connection.
A few hours after Everything Is Love dropped, Melbourne neo-soul outfit Hiatus Kaiyote revealed on Instagram that their 2012 track ‘The World It Softly Lulls’ had been sampled by The Carters on ‘713’.
They’re the only Australian act to be sampled on the record, which also includes snippets from artists like Common, Biggie, Erykah Badu, and Flower Travellin’ Band.
It’s definitely not the first time Haitus have been sampled by a major hip-hop act — in fact, they’re basically the go-to band for samples these days.
Last year, Kendrick Lamar took snippets of their 2015 track ‘Atari’ and placed them into his incendiary DAMN. cut ‘DUCKWORTH’, and Toronto’s finest Drake used Hiatus’ ‘Building A Ladder’ in ‘Free Smoke’ — the opening song of his sprawling More Life.
Before that, they also featured in Anderson .Paak’s breakout 2016 album Malibu, with their song ‘Molasses’ being used in the track ‘Without You’. Chance the Rapper also used their track ‘Fingertips’ in his 2015 song ‘Hiatus’. That’s not all: they’ve also copped shoutouts from the likes of enlightened Smith spawn Willow Smith, and perfect human Mahershala Ali.
Hiatus Kaiyote’s last record was Choose Your Weapon, which landed in 2015. They returned to the stage fairly recently to play a one-off show at Sydney’s Vivid — but there’s no indication they’ll be turning the performance into a tour.
Happily, The Carters’ Everything Is Love has now landed on all streaming services, meaning we can all listen to it without having to sign up for our 53rd free trial of Tidal. Listen to ‘713’ below.
