With the Academy Awards kicking off tomorrow, Hollywood’s major players are doing what they does best: elaborate in-jokes and unflattering parodies of each other. Of course, it’s going to be dropped into hyperdrive when the official ceremony gets underway, but this year we’ve been treated to some of the good stuff ahead of time.

As part of their hosting gig today at the Independent Spirit Awards — the Oscars’ smaller artsier sibling — Fred Armisen and Kristen Bell took on Alejandro González Iñárritu’s highly technical artistic triumph/Michael Keaton biopic Birdman with the A-list help of Adam Scott, Miles Teller and Bill Hader.

Main takeaways: it’s very satisfying watching Bill Hader slap people, I would actually love to see a film about Fred Armisen resurrecting his career after playing Prince on SNL, and he really should make more Portlandia.

And, because Birdman may be one of the most ridiculously meta showbiz films ever created, this isn’t the first parody it’s had in recent days. Earlier this week, Sesame Street — SESAME STREET — got in on the action with an ingenious bit about Big Bird’s original puppeteer and voice actor.

It was called ‘Big Birdman’ because of course it was.

The 87th Academy Awards kick off at 12.30pm tomorrow on Channel Nine. You can expect a whole lot more where this came from.
