Behold This Tumblr Of Silent Black People Enduring The ‘Gilmore Girls’ Revival

There were many non-white extras, but very few of them got to speak.

There were many things about Gilmore Girls that fans hoped would be ‘fixed’ by the revival. They hoped that the homophobic jokes would disappear, the fat-shaming would cease and that there would be more roles available to people of colour. These things didn’t happen!

In terms of the lack of non-white people on the show, perhaps the most frustrating thing was it seemed like Gilmore Girls had made a concerted effort to up the number of POC in the ranks of the extras, but almost all of the speaking roles were still played by white actors (even the new characters).

Casting directors: this does not solve the problem! You cannot use black people as diversity set pieces for the background of town meetings! This frustration has led to the excellent Tumblr, Gilmore Blacks which contends: “Gilmore Girls decided to boost its black representation this season. Visually. Almost none of the actors had speaking roles. We are here to fill in the blanks”.

Please enjoyed some imagined conversations from the silent extras trying to endure Stars Hollow (and find more endurance of whiteness here):
