The manger of a hotel in Sydney’s inner-west has been fired after the hotel was heavily criticised over a “Keep Calm And Slap A Bitch” promotion to coincide with the NRL finals series.

The Coopers Hotel in Newtown has sacked its general manager, Gary Wright, after the post was published last night.

“Keep calm and slap a bitch as we approach the finals of this years NRL! Live and loud every game,” read the post, alongside an image of the Batman slapping Robin meme.

Following the backlash, it has been reported that the post was edited to criticise people who “can’t take a joke” before it was removed altogether.

A short time later, another post was published under Wright’s name.

“Hi all, my name is Gary Wright, I am the general manager of the Coopers Hotel and I wholly apologise for the recent post by myself on our social media platform.”

The post was in especially bad taste given a recent study that showed incidents of domestic violence spike on State of Origin nights.

It’s not the only questionable post on the pub’s social media pages.

This morning, the hotel published another post on its page saying Wright’s employment had been terminated.

“We are the licensees of the Cooper Hotel in Newtown,” the post read.

“As some of you may be aware, yesterday a staff member posted a meme with an inappropriate comment on our Facebook page. That post was subsequently removed.

“We have taken action in relation to that staff member. Their employment has been immediately terminated and they no longer work at the hotel. Their behaviour does not reflect who we are.

“As licensees of Cooper Hotel, we do not condone violence of any type against any person regardless, of age, gender or sexual preference. That’s not who we are. We pride ourselves on being part of the Newtown community, providing good food, great entertainment and a safe environment.

“On behalf of the staff and management at Cooper Hotel we apologise.”
