Come And Intern With Us!

Junkee is looking for a brand new intern, to join our Surry Hills office. Applications close Friday October 18.

Want more Junkee in your life? Sign up to our newsletter, and follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook so you always know where to find us.

Hello. Do you like what we do, and want to learn how to do it? We’re looking for a new unpaid intern, to start in our Surry Hills office next month.

Junkee’s current editorial intern is the wonderful Katie Booth; you’ll have read her words on when pop culture meets politicsZelda Williams vs Twitterthat stupid ‘Yo’ app, and the science of spoiler alerts. But she finishes up with us soon, and is leaving some super-smart shoes to fill.

Working on the Junkee desk at our Surry Hills office, you’ll be mentored by Alex McKinnon and myself. We’ll help you with your writing and pitches, give you assignments and deadlines and all of the feedback, show you how to HTML, explain how the business side works, and — of course — publish your brilliant work. You’ll be expected to come up with news ideas in the morning and write them up during the day; you’ll also be given some long-term projects for larger pieces of writing, that we’ll help you put together.

This is an editorial internship first and foremost, but as you’ll be part of the Sound Alliance family (who also publish FasterLouder, inthemix, and Same Same), you’ll be given the opportunity to help with events, marketing, and all of the other fun things that we do. It’s your call though; this internship is really what you decide to make of it.

Not surprisingly, there are a few tests you need to pass to make it our program — but first, you probably have questions.

Who’s eligible?

Ambitious, self-starting, creative, effective people who love what we do, know how words work, and can pipe up when they’re ready to move onto the next thing. You need to live in Sydney, or be prepared to commute — and you need to be currently enrolled in study to ensure this is all legit.

Ok, keep talking…..

Our offices are in the delicious 2010 zip code, Surry Hills. You’ll have plenty of lunch options in a three-block radius. Headquarters is a mish mash of raw timber and the various colours of the rainbow. We have a ping pong table too, because #newmedia.

How many days a week do I have to work?

At least one full day a week, for around five months. We’re flexible with time commitment, so if you need to fill requirements for your degree, or want to spend some more time learning from us in our office, we can make that work.

When does it start?

The week beginning October 20,  2014.

What will I get out of it?

You’ll learn as much as you have the ability and initiative to learn. We’ll expect you to contribute from day one. We want you to get more out of us than we get out of you; this involves you being assertive, and coming to our office with an understanding of exactly what you want to get out of the internship.

Outside of producing stories and story ideas for Junkee, you can expect to be involved in weekly editorial meetings, brainstorming sessions for native advertising pitches, and helping co-ordinate our content schedule and contributor network.

You can also put your hand up to get experience in some of the other areas of The Sound Alliance, too; this internship is what you make it.

Okay, I wanna apply. What do I need to do?

Firstly, drop us a line via [email protected] with the following details about yourself:

·   Your computer skills, previous experience and any writing samples

·   The degree you’re currently studying and which uni you’re at

·   What you’d like to get out of the internship

Then separately (and much more importantly) sell yourself to us.

We’re interested in some slick, persuasive advertising in the form of a pitch letter – or something far more creative – with you as the product. As soon as you think its proper gold (that is, above and beyond what your competitors might do), send it across.

Applications close Friday 11th of October and we will be in touch with the top candidates ONLY by Friday 18th of October.

We’ll be holding interviews Monday 20th-25th October, expecting a new intern to start W/C Monday October 27.
