A new Cloverfield movie — The Cloverfield Paradox — will drop on Netflix TODAY, as soon as the Super Bowl ends, the streaming service has confirmed.

US viewers of the Super Bowl were treated to a teaser during the first half of the big game this morning, with a promise that the film would premiere “very soon”. It turns out “very soon”, means in just a couple of hours.

Entertainment journalists were quickly sent an email confirming the J.J. Abrams-directed film would drop on Netflix immediately after the game.

It’s a bold move from Netflix. Before today, we hadn’t seen any footage or heard any news about the film, except that it had gone through several potential names and bounced from studio to studio during production.

It’s not the first time the franchise has taken an unexpected route in marketing a Cloverfield film. The original was shrouded in secrecy, with the trailers taking on a “found footage” feel as part of a viral marketing campaign. The sequel, 10 Cloverfield Lane, had a completely different look and feel to the original.

Unsurprisingly, fans of the franchise are cheering at the unexpected news.

You can watch the full trailer below, but you won’t have to wait long for the real thing.
